Herbert Barton was born in Newcastle in June 1895 and enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service as a Fitter in February 1918. Transferred to the newly established Royal Air Force that April, he served briefly in France and thence, between July and November, in 66 Wing in Italy. He was transferred to the Reserve in April 1919.
Sold with the recipient’s original Soldier’s Pay Book for Use on Active Service, and Certificate of Transfer to the Reserve, this latter dated at Catterick on 30 April 1919, together with three Great War photographic postcards, including portrait of the recipient, and his British Passport with an U.S. Consulate visa issued on 11 October 1923, with endorsement the ‘holder declares his intention to remain indefinitely.’
