Pair: Private J. Dovey, 21st Lancers, who rode at the charge at Omdurman, 2 September 1898 and with the 16th Lancers, was wounded in action in the Boer War, 23 December 1901

Job Dovey was born in Martin Hussingtree, near Worcester. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Corps of Hussars at Worcester on 7 December 1896, aged 19 years, 1 month. Posted to the 21st Hussars, as Private 4005, becoming 21st Lancers in 1897, he served in Egypt and the Sudan, December 1897-December 1898. With ’C’ Squadron, 21st Lancers, he served at the battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. Returning home, he was tried and sentenced to 84 days imprisonment for some offence, returning to duty in March 1900. Posted to South Africa in March 1901, he was transferred to the 16th Lancers as Private 4634. Private Dovey was severely wounded in an action situated between Clanwilliam and Calvina, on 23 December 1901. He returned home in May 1902 and was discharged as unfit at Netley on 9 December 1902. For his services in South Africa he was awarded the Queen’s medal with clasps for Cape Colony and Orange Free State. With copied service papers, medal rolls and other research.
