Five: Private J. Brown, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (7923 Pte, 1/A. & S. Highrs.); 1914 Star, with clasp (7923 Pte., 2/A. & S. Highrs.); British War and Victory Medals (7923 Pte., A. & S. Highrs.); Imperial Service Medal, G.V.R. (John Chisholm Little Brown) mounted as worn, very fine and better (5) £280-320

John Chisholm Brown was born in Edinburgh. A Printer by occupation and a former member of the Royal Marines, he attested for service with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh on 4 February 1901, aged 18 years. With the 1st Battalion he served in South Africa, 9 April 1902-29 May 1903. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 4 February 1904. Brown re-engaged in 1913 and was mobilised at Stirling in August 1914. With the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 10 August 1914. He received a gunshot wound to his right arm on 1 July 1915; as a result of which, he was discharged on 22 March 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge. As an Edinburgh Postman, he was awarded the I.S.M. in 1944 (London Gazette 10 March 1944). Sold with copied service papers, roll extracts and m.i.c.
