The Warwickshire Yeomanry sailed for Egypt on the Horse Transport Wayfarer from Avonmouth, 11 April 1915. The ship was torpedoed the same day but did not sink. 763 horses were saved by volunteers from the regiment - one M.C. and 12 M.S.M’s. were awarded for this action. Private A. Richard Andrews, Warwickshire Yeomanry entered the Egyptian theatre of war on 20 April 1915 and was then posted with his regiment to Gallipoli. They became dismounted in August 1915 and transferred to Mudros, thence Egypt in November 1915. The unit served in Palestine, 1917-18. In April 1918 they were amalgamated with the South Notts Hussars to form “B” Battalion Machine Gun Corps. Sailing from Alexandria to Marseilles in H.M.T. Leasowe Castle on 26 May 1918, the ship was torpedoed and sunk the next day. Carrying some 3000 troops, 92 men including the captain of the ship were killed in the attack. Survivors of the unit were sent to France in June 1918. The unit was re-designated the 100th Battalion M.G.C. in August 1918. Private R. Andrews was disembodied on 8 April 1919. With copied m.i.c.
