William Cartwright was born in and enlisted at Huddersfield, Yorkshire. As a Serjeant in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 29 July 1915. Serving as Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 in the 11th Battalion, he was killed in action on 15 September 1916, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont.
