Louis Francis Dickson was born in Berwick, Northumberland. A Railway Servant by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Highland Light Infantry (Militia), he attested for the King’s Own Scottish Borderers at Glasgow on 17 April 1896, aged 18 years, 8 months. Rising through the ranks, he was appointed Lance-Corporal, February 1899; Lance-Serjeant, January 1905; Serjeant, April 1906; Serjeant Cook, August 1908; Acting C.S.M., September 1914. In January 1915 he reverted to Serjeant. He served in the East Indies, January 1899-June 1904; Egypt and Sudan, September 1907-October 1909. Served in France from 19 January to 9 May 1915 and again, January-September 1916 and April 1917-April 1918. Elected to draw a pension in April 1918 but re-enlisted in the Labour Corps in July 1919, with the rank of Private. Between the wars he was employed by the L.N.E.R. During the Second World War he was C.S.M. with the Lasswade Platoon, Home Guard. Awarded the M.S.M. at a Passing Out Parade of the Royal Scots at Dreghorn in 1950, the medal being presented by Brigadier A. M. Finlayson, D.S.O., O.B.E. (ref. Dalkeith Advertiser, 15 June 1950). With copied service papers, m.i.c. and newspaper extract. Also with an original photograph of the recipient in later life wearing his medals.
