Lionel Hicks was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, lived in Mitcham and enlisted at Handel Street, London. Serving with the 1st Battalion London Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 27 May 1916. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

(Rowland) William Hicks was born in Deptford, Surrey, lived in Mitcham and enlisted at Handel Street, London. Serving with the 1st Battalion London Regiment, he died of wounds, France/Flanders,on 5 June 1916, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1.

The three brothers were the sons of Mary Elizabeth and the late George Hicks, of 14 High Street, Mitcham, Surrey. The 1901 Census records the family living in Dallington, Northamptonshire and consisting of mother and father, with the children Mabel (15), Frank (14), Ernest G. (11), Rowland W. (10), Lionel (9), Hilda (7), Douglas C. (3), and Gladys (8 months). With some copied research.
