Joseph Barber was born in Hoo, Kent in 1820. He first entered the Royal Navy in 1837, serving as a Boy 1st Class on H.M.S. Castor. As an Ordinary Seaman aboard the same ship he served in the operations on and off the coast of Syria, 1840.
