A Great War D.C.M. awarded to Private H. Calvert, Royal Army Medical Corps, who was killed in action on the Somme in November 1916

D.C.M. London Gazette 22 September 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry while acting as one of the advanced stretcher-bearers. He repeatedly made journeys across the open under intense shell fire to bring in wounded men, and exhibited the greatest coolness and courage in the performance of his duties.’

Henry Calvert was born in Bedlington, Northumberland, and enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps at Aldershot. First embarked for France in early October 1915, he was decorated for the above cited deeds as a member of 19th Field Ambulance on the Somme in the summer of 1916, and was killed in action towards the end of the year, on 3 November. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery.
