Edward Rawdon Penrose was born in Co. Cork on 8 September 1856. Attended the Royal Military College. Commissioned a Lieutenant in the 4th Regiment on 12 February 1876. With the regiment he served in the Zulu campaign and was awarded the South Africa Medal with clasp for 1879. As a Lieutenant in the Royal Lancaster Regiment, he was posted to the Bombay Staff College in January 1883. Served in the Burma expedition 1885-87 and was awarded the above medal and clasp. Promoted to Captain in the Indian Staff Corps in August 1887. Advanced to Major in February 1896; Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1896 and Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1902.
