James McDonnell was born in Donabate, Co. Dublin and enlisted at Dublin. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, he died of wounds, France/Flanders on 30 May 1918, aged 38 years. He was buried in the Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt. He was the son of Christopher and Mary McDonnell, of Donabate, Co. Dublin.
