John Saunders was born in Ashbendon, Ledbury, Herefordshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 44th Regiment at Hereford on 7 March 1845, aged 17 years, ten months. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1854; reduced to Private in October 1855; promoted to Corporal once more in July 1861 and advanced to Sergeant in August 1863. Discharged at his own request on 27 June 1866. He had served nearly 6 years in the Mediterranean; 2 years, 3 months in Turkey and the Crimea; 1 year, 8 months in China and nearly 6 years in the East Indies. With copied service papers.
