South Africa 1834-53 (J. Appleton, 45th Regt.) some edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine £260-300

John Appleton was born in Newbery, Berkshire. A Barge Builder by occupation, he attested for the 45th Regiment at Windsor, Berkshire on 23 July 1839, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served 22 months at Gibraltar; 10 months in Monte Video and over 12 years at the Cape of Good Hope, serving in both the Second (1846-47) and Third (1850-53) Kaffir Wars. He was promoted to Corporal in July 1849 and attained the rank of Sergeant in May 1850 but was reduced to Private in March 1853. Attaining the rank of Corporal once more in July 1859 he was discharged at his own request in December 1860. With copied discharge papers.
