Baltic 1854-55 (J. T. Bromfield, Rl. Saprs. & Minrs.) officially impressed naming, very fine and scarce £600-800
John T. Bromfield was born in the Parish of St Mary Major, near Exeter, Devon, and attested for the Royal Sappers and Miners at Rochester, Kent, on 1 April 1846, aged 18 years 4 months, a plumber and painter by trade. He was discharged at Shorncliffe on 27 August 1867, having served more than 21 years. Although his character was then described as ‘very good’ it is noted that his name appears in the Regimental Defaulters Book 25 times, in the Company Defaulters Book 44 times, and that he was twice tried by Court Martial. He served abroad in Bermuda 5 years 34 days, at Bomarsund and in the Crimea 1 year 298 days, and at Gibraltar 4 years 250 days, and ‘is in possession of Baltic Medal, Crimean Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol and Turkish War Medal’.
