Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Lieut. B. M. Kenrick, H.M. 33rd Regt. Foot) engraved naming, claw tightened but slack, some contact marks and edge bruising, very fine £260-300
Buxton Martin Kenrick first applied for a commission in the 33rd Regiment in June 1846, aged 18 years but was unsuccessful. After attending Sandhurst Military College, he made another application and this time he was successful, obtaining the commission of Ensign in the 33rd Regiment at a cost of £450, on 18 January 1850. He was promoted to Lieutenant by purchase in September 1852 and promoted to Captain without purchase in September 1855. Although Kenrick is documented as having arrived in the Crimea on 14 September 1854, he ‘missed’ serving at the battle of Alma six days later, being stationed at Varna at the time. Kerick served at the battle of Inkermann and was present at the first bombardment of Sebastopol. He left the Crimea and returned to England on 24 December 1854 due to an illness. Kenrick’s early return helped him to be amongst the small number of officers and men who were personally presented with their medals by Queen Victoria on 18 May 1855. With copied service notes.
