Victory Medal 1914-19 (Major H. St. L. Stucley) nearly very fine £80-100

Major Humphrey St. Leger Stucley, King’s Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, was killed in action, in Flanders, on 29 October 1914, aged 37 years. He was buried in the Zantvoorde British Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

He had previously served in the Nile Expedition 1898 and was present at the battle of Omdurman (Queen’s & Khedive’s Sudan with clasp). In the Boer War he served in operations in the Orange Free State, April-May 1900; operations in Orange River Colony, May-29 November 1900, including actions at Biddulphsberg and Wittebergen. Served as Adjutant to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, May 1901. Served in operations in the Transvaal, February-March 1901; operations in the Orange River Colony, December 1900-February 1901 and March 1901-May 1902. (Queen’s medal with three clasps and King’s medal with two). Major Stucley, Grenadier Guards, entered France/Flanders on 4 October 1914. For his all too brief service in Flanders he was mentioned in Sir John French’s despatches (
London Gazette 17 February 1915). His 1914 Star trio of medals were claimed by his wife, whose home address was at 26 St. George’s Road, London, S.W.19.
