William Robert Christie was born in Pimlico, London. He attested for the Grenadier Guards on 28 April 1891, aged 14 years, 7 months. Initially ranked as a Boy, he was appointed a Drummer in October 1893 and served overseas in Gibraltar, September 1897-July 1898 and Egypt and Sudan, July-October 1898. In March 1903 he re-engaged for the Royal Engineers and was appointed a Bugler with the Royal Anglesey R.E. (Militia). He was discharged at Beaumaris, Anglesey on the termination of his second period of engagement in April 1912. Christie, living at 12 Church Street, Seven Sisters, Gloucestershire and employed as a Postman, attested for service at Cardiff on 1 January 1915, aged 38 years. He was posted to the 16th Battalion Welsh Regiment, being transferred to the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in April 1918 and to the Seaforth Highlanders in September 1918. Served with the B.E.F. from 4 December 1915. Transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 4 February 1919. With copied service papers.
