Petty Officer Henry Purcell Jaques, R.N. was killed in action, when the old battleship H.M.S. Formidable was torpedoed and sunk by the U.24, off Portland Bill, 1 January 1915. Of the 780 persons on board, 35 officers and 512 men were lost. Aged 31 years at the time of his death; his name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was the son of George and Mary Jaques, of 39 Sandside, Scarborough.
