William Edward Acklam was born in Scarborough on 16 October 1895. A Butcher by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy on 6 May 1914. Serving on the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Cornwall, October 1914-August 1916, he saw action at the battle of the Falkland Island, 8 December 1914 and was advanced to Ordinary Seaman in November 1914 and to Able Seaman in November 1915. After being based at H.M.S. Pembroke I, August 1916-February 1917, he was next on the monitor H.M.S. Marshal Soult, February 1917-November 1918; as such he took part in the First Ostend Raid of 23/24 April 1918. Acklam was mentioned in despatches for his services aboard the monitor during the period, 1 January-30 June 1918 (London Gazette 20 September 1918). Serving on the battleship H.M.S. Royal Oak, January 1920-August 1922, he attained the rating of Leading Seaman in October 1920. Later served on the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Hermes, June 1925-June 1926. Discharged on 15 October 1926.
