James Stewart Fernie was born on 2 June 1896. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Hussars, 1 October 1914, he was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916. Seriously wounded at Villecholles, 22 March 1918. Transferred to the Tank Corps 21 February 1920. Promoted to Captain, December 1923 and served as Adjutant, May 1934-March 1936; advanced to Major, April 1936. Listed in the XI Hussar Journal, September 1916, as a noted marathon runner. With copied m.i.c. and other research.
