Albert Edward Callf was born in Bethnal Green, London on 25 June 1892. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 7 July 1909, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in October 1909. Serving on H.M.S. Superb, March 1910-May 1911, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in June 1910 and Able Seaman in May 1911. He served aboard H.M.S. Vindictive in the Zeebrugge Raid, 23 April 1918, was severely wounded in action, and is recorded as having participated in the ballot for a V.C. for that operation (London Gazette 23 July 1918). Invalided in December 1919, he was known to family members to have suffered post-traumatic stress.
