John Hill was born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim and attested for the Royal Artillery at Lisburn, Co. Antrim on 20 August 1851, aged 18 years, 2 months. He served with the 9th Battalion Royal Artillery in the Crimea and was wounded on the right arm during the siege of Sebastopol, 21 October 1854. He was promoted to Bombardier in September 1860; Corporal in August 1865 and Sergeant in May 1867. Sergeant Hill was discharged on 4 October 1873. In September 1874 he became Sergeant-Instructor in the 1st Renfrewshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, a position he held for 10 years. With copied service papers.
