George Newborn was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. A French Polisher by occupation, he attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment on 20 January 1905, aged 23 years. With the regiment he served in India and was awarded the I.G.S. with clasp for operations in the Mohmand Country 1908. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1914, he was recalled in August 1914 and served in France, September 1914-January 1919. Suffered a gunshot wound to the right hip in 1914. With copied service papers - entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp trio of medals.
