Thomas William Carruthers was born in Preston, Lancashire. He attested for the Suffolk Regiment on 18 September 1885, aged 14 years. Appointed a Drummer with the 4th Battalion, 1885-1891, after which he was transferred to the Depot, 1891-96, being promoted to Lance-Corporal in 1891 and to Corporal in 1893. Transferred to the 1st Battalion, July-October 1896, he was promoted to Lance-Sergeant in August 1896. Then transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 1896-1904, he served in India, being promoted to Sergeant in 1898 and Colour Sergeant in 1899. Colour Sergeant Carruthers was discharged at Bury St. Edmunds on 28 June 1904; his Army L.S. & G.C. (awarded in 1903) was his only medallic award. Latterly employed as a L.C.C. Education Officer, he died in Whipps Cross Hospital on 17 May 1949. With copied service papers; photocopied photograph of the recipient; death certificate and modern photograph of his gravestone.

Alfred Georgeson Cook was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Hampshire Regiment in 1890, aged 18 years. He joined the 1st Battalion in India in 1892 and was promoted to Lance-Corporal in 1894 and Corporal in 1897. He transferred to the Army Reserve in 1898 but immediately rejoined the Colours and was posted to the Depot. Appointed Lance-Sergeant in 1900 and rejoined the 1st Battalion in India, 1900-03. In 1903 he was appointed Sergeant and posted to the 2nd Battalion on Home Service. In 1904 he rejoined the 1st Battalion and was appointed Master Cook. Appointed Sergeant Cook in 1908. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in 1909. Discharged in 1911. With the start of the war he enlisted into the Royal Irish Rifles in September 1914 but was discharged unfit in December. Not discouraged he enlisted into the Hampshire Regiment in November 1916 but was again discharged unfit in October 1917. With copied service papers.
