India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Hazara 1891 (1662 Lce. Corpl. C. H. Hughes, 1st Bn. R.W. Fus.); together with Soldiers’ Total Abstinence Association Medal, for 1 Year (STA.1); another, for 3 Years (STA.2); Army Temperance Association: India Medal, for 6 Months (ATAI.1); another, for 5 Years (ATAI.5); another, for 6 Years (ATAI.6); with related ‘Fidelity’, ‘Excelsior’ and ‘Hazara 1891’ bars, these all held in a (damaged) fitted Pegler, Norwich leather case, nearly extremely fine and attractive (lot) £240-280

Charles Hugh Hughes was born in Dolwen, Llanlilan, Abergelly. He attested for service with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 15 November 1886, aged 22 years, 10 months. Serving in India, he earned the I.G.S. Medal with clasp for Hazara 1891. Promoted to Lance-Corporal in January 1890 and to Corporal in September 1892. Was in possession of two Good Conduct Badges. He was discharged in consequence of the termination of his first period of limited engagement at Wrexham on 14 November 1898. Was employed as Sub-Postmaster at Kingston Lisle. With the onset of the Great War, Hughes rejoined the Colours and served at home in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and Royal Defence Corps. He was discharged in 1918 as medically unfit and awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). He returned to Kingston Lisle after the war and continued to serve as Sub-Postmaster there for some 32 years. Hughes died at Kingston Lisle on 8 July 1936, aged 72 years.
