Two Aviation Trophies won by Lewis Turner, Pioneer Aviator and Flying Instructor at the London Aerodrome, Hendon. The LONDON AERODROME TROPHY, Silver, hallmarked Birmingham, 1912, designed by G. Halliday (Won by L. W. F. Turner, second August meeting, August 31st, 1912, for Grand Speed Handicap),160 mm diameter. LARGE SILVER CUP hallmarked London, 1911, 248 mm high (Presented by T. Teofani Esq., London Aerodrome Hendon, Won by L. W. F. Turner, Summer meeting, May 18th, 1912). Both pieces in extremely fine condition (2)

Lewis William Francis Turner was born at Strickland, Dorset, 7 January 1884. He was a pupil of the Grahame-White School of Flying at Hendon and qualified for his pilot-aviator's certificate on 4th April 1911, Flight Magazine recording that he was 'the first Englishman to win his 'brevet' since the more stringent tests were imposed.' The Grahame-White School of Flying was based at the London Aerodrome, Hendon, together with the Bleriot School and the Valkyrie School. Lewis Turner having qualified for his R.Ae.C. Pilot Certificate, joined the Grahame-White School of Flying as an instructor and competed regularly at Flying meetings.
