Brigadier General Claude Julian Hawker was educated at Eton and commissioned into 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, in 1887; served with the Coldstream Guards attached to the Egyptian Army, 1899 to 1909, commanding the Camel Corps, 1904-05, and took part in the Sudan Campaign 1899, including the first advance against the Khalifa (medal with clasp); Governor of Suakin, 1906; in command of the Red Sea Military District, 1907-09; attached to the Turkish Gendarmerie, as Senior British Officer, from May 1910 until September, 1914, serving throughout the Balkan War, 1912-13, and in Trebizonde, 1913-14; appointed Provost Marshal to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 1915-16 and served at Gallipoli and throughout the Mesopotamian Campaign, 1916-17; Military Governor of Bagdad March 1917 to November 1918; served on the Staff of the British Army in Palestine and Syria until 1921; during this period he was Director of the Central Relief Committee for Egypt and served on the Allenstein Plebiscite Commission in 1920, and the Upper Silesian Commission in 1920 and 1921. During the Great War Brigadier General Hawker was four times mentioned in despatches, created C.M.G. (1918) and C.B.E. (1919).
