Colonel George Grant Gordon was born in London on 29 January 1836, the son of Lord Francis Gordon and grandson of the 9th Marquis of Huntly. He joined the Scots Guards (then the Scots Fusilier Guards) in 1852, as Ensign and Lieutenant. He served throughout the Crimean War 1854-56, becoming Lieutenant and Captain, 26 December, 1854. He was promoted Lieutenant- Colonel on 13 February 1863, at the age of 29, and was placed on half pay in 1877. Having previously served as a Page of Honour, 1844-52, he rejoined the Royal Household and was appointed Comptroller of the Household, Treasurer and Equerry to H.R.H. Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, on his marriage to Princess Helena, Daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1866, and on his retirement from this post in 1890, was appointed an Extra Equerry. He joined the 3rd Bn. Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) as a Major in 1881, succeeding to the command in 1889. He retired in 1898 and was appointed honorary Colonel of the 3rd Battalion in 1899. In 1900 he took command of the 2nd Bn. Royal Scottish Reserve Regiment then stationed at Glencorse and Edinburgh Castle.
