A scarce pair to Lieutenant The Honourable W. G Osborne, 26th Foot, late 16th Lancers.

ARMY OF INDIA 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Bhurtpoor (Cornet, 16th Lancers), short hyphen reverse, impressed naming; CHINA 1842 (Lieut. The Hon., 26th Foot), good very fine (2)

William Godolphin Osborne was the great-great-greatgrandson of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. He was also the fourth cousin of Sir Winston Churchill's great-grandfather, George, 6th Duke of Marlborough. As a Cornet in the 16th Lancers, Osborne served at the Siege of Bhurtpoor on the 17th and 18th of January 1826. Later he transferred to the 26th Foot (The Cameronians, or Scottish Rifles), and served with that Regiment during the First China War from the 5th of July, 1840 until the 29th of August, 1842.
