Three: General Sir F. W. Thomas, K.C.B., Royal Marines.

General Sir Francis William Thomas, K.C.B., was born in 1832 and first commissioned in the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1849. He served in the Crimea in 1854 and 1855, fighting with distinction in the Royal Marine Battalion at Eupatoria, and with the Brigade at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and also at Kinburn. For his services at the last mentioned battle, he was mentioned in despatches (medal with clasp, Medjidie 5th class, Turkish medal). He commanded the Plymouth Division, R.M.L.I., in 1885 and was promoted General in 1889. General Thomas was appointed K.C.B. on the occasion of the Coronation of King George V (London Gazette 19th June 1911).
