Captain Herbert Frederick Northey Hopkins was commissioned in the Lancashire Fusiliers as a Lieutenant, 29 July 1882. Prior to 1890 he transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders and served in India with the second battalion in the Hazara expedition against the Black Mountain tribes of Hassanzais, Akazais and Chagarzais. The Chagarzais were finally defeated at Kotgai and Maidan. He later served in the South African War as Captain and Adjutant of the Cheshire Regiment.
