Colonel Cathcart Dempster served in the Mahsood Wuzeeree Expedition in 1881. He was appointed 2nd-in-command of the 4th Sikhs and served as Officer Commanding base and lines of communications in the Black Mountain Expedition, Hazara 1891 (mentioned in despatches). He commanded the regiment in the Isazai Expedition, 1892, and was appointed Commandant of the regiment in 1893. He commanded the regiment throughout the relief of Chitral and led it up the highest peak held in force by the enemy at the attack on the Malakand Pass, 3rd April, 1895 (despatches and brevet of Colonel).
