A rare Messina Earthquake group to G. L. Hazelden S.S. Drake, Merchant Navy.

BRITISH WAR MEDAL; MERCANTILE MARINE WAR MEDAL; ORDER OF THE CROWN OF ITALY, Officer, breast badge in gold and enamel by Cravanzola, Rome, in case of issue; MESSINA EARTHQUAKE 1908, silver medal, in case of issue, extremely fine (4)

George Louis Hazelden, 2nd Mate of S.S. Drake was awarded a silver medal and diploma by the King of Italy for services rendered at the time of the earthquake at Messina in 1908. He was further awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy, by the King, Victor Emannuel III, 21 May, 1909 'in consideration of the services rendered on the occasion of the earthquake in Sicily and Calabria (1908).' The group is accompanied by the original Diploma, Warrant of Award for the Crown of Italy with English translation, and a portrait photograph of the recipient wearing the two Italian awards.
