Charles Edward Fraser Copeman was the 5th son of the late Canon Copeman of Norwich. He was educated at Norwich School, Selwyn and King's College, Cambridgeshire. He was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the Cambridgeshire Regiment on 17 October, 1914, and, under his command, the '1st (Imperial Service) Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment' was formed at Bury. The Battalion arrived in France in February, 1915, and joined the 82nd Brigade of the 27th Division, consisting of Regular Battalions from India and China in addition to the 9th R. Scots, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the1st Cambridgeshires. Copeman commanded the regiment at Ypres until invalided home in May, 1915. He succeeded to the command of the 62nd Provisional Battalion which subsequently became 9th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. Copeman was mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 27 July, 1917, and in the same year awarded the C.M.G. He was Vice Chairman of the Cambs and Isle of Ely T.F.A., and served as Under Sheriff for Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire on several occasions.
