Vivien Ellenberger was born in 1896, of French Mission families of Basutoland. He was educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown, and joined the Bechuanaland Protectorate Colonial Service in 1915. He served in the Great War with the South African Forces in Nyasaland and German East Africa, being mentioned in despatches. He was with the Bechuanaland Protectorate Service for 37 years during which time he was successively a Magistrate, Distict Commissioner, and Government Secretary. He was awardedthe C.B.E. and I.S.O. during these years. He retired with his wife to Southern Rhodesiain 1956 and devoted his spare time to his life long interest in stamp collecting. In recognition of his work in this field, his name was added, in 1971, to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (S.A.). He died suddenly of a heart attack on 11 July 1977.
