CHINA 1900, no clasp (Lieut. J.H. Orton, R.N. H.M.S. Endymion) good very fine
Lieut. J.H. Orton received the Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society medal for his services as Fourth Officer on the R.M.S. Teutonic during 1895. The citation states that he won the silver award 'for having with a boat's crew, in a blinding blizzard and heavy breaking sea, bravely attempted to rescue the crew of the fishing schooner James Reeves which vessel had to be abandoned about ten miles from Sandy Hook'. For the same incident he was further decorated with the U.S. Presidential Gold Medal, and the Gold Medal of the Lifesaving and Benevolent Association of New York.
