Lieutenant General Philip Smith commanded the Grenadier Guards in the Egyptian Expedition 1882, at the action of Tel-El-Mahuta and at the battle of Tel-El-Kebir. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the C.B. and 3rd class Medjidie. His Egypt medal was presented to him personally by Queen Victoria on 21st November, 1882. He had previously served as a Brigade Major in Canada, 1863, and as Assistant Military Secretary at Gibraltar, 1872-77. From 1889 to 1892 he commanded the Home District (Colchester), and died at Huntingdon in 1894.
