Brigadier-General John Archibald Houison-Craufurd (1862-1933) was commissioned Lieutenant, Lancashire Fusiliers, 22nd October, 1881, and transferred to the 7th Bombay Infantry in 1883. He took part in the Zhob Valley Expedition on the North West Frontier of India in 1884 and the expeditions in Burma between 1885 and 1889. Having been promoted Captain in 1892 and Major in 1901, he served with the China Expeditionary Force as D.A.Q.M.G., 2nd Infantry Brigade, during the Boxer rebellion of 1900-01. He was mentioned in Lt. General Sir Alfred Gasalee's despatch of 6th July, 1901. He was again mentioned in despatches for services in East Africa, Somaliland 1902-04. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1905 and was placed on the retired list. Prior to the outbreak of the Great War he was a co-opted Member of the Territorial Force Association at Ayr and was recalled for service as a Staff Officer as Colonel in 1916. From 1916 to 1918 he held the appointment of A.Q.M.G. Scottish Command. He was promoted Acting Brigadier General and brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War 'for valuable services rendered in connexion with the war.' Appointed C.B.E. 1st January, 1919, and C.M.G. 3rd June, 1919 'in recognition of valuable and distinguished services with the Royal Air Force rendered during the war.'
