Brenton Halliburton Smith was first commissioned on 20 August 1851; Lieutenant, 8 December 1853; Captain, 15 June 1860. He was one of the first officers of the 23rd Pioneers and features in the group photograph of the officers in China 1860 under Captain R. H. Shebeare, V.C., who died during the campaign. Smith appears to have returned to his old regiment, the 67th N.I., after China and is shown in the Indian Army and Civil List for 1864 as serving with the Staff Corps in Australia. He is not shown in the list for 1867.
