George III (1765-1820), Douglas Littler, Dove & Co., Shilling, 1811, view of Peel Castle, reverse legend (Prid. 48). Has been expertly plugged at 12 o 'clock, obverse fine, reverse very fine, rare

The Douglas Bank Co. was founded in November 1811, and had premises in Fort Street, Douglas. One of the partners, Revd. Robert Littler, sought to leave the island shortly after the tokens appeared. James Dove, another partner, brought an action against him for £1,000, following which the clergyman was arrested and imprisoned. Not to be outdone, the third partner, William Scarlett Littler, brought proceedings against Dove in the Chancery Court. On 3rd January, 1812 the clergyman was freed, and the Douglas Bank Co. wound up.
