Major the Honourable Hugh Joseph Fraser, M.V.O., 2nd battalion Scots Guards was killed in action at Kruiseik, near Ypres, on the 27th October 1914. He was the third son of the 13th Baron Lovat and brother to the 14th Baron. Born in 1874 at Phoiness, Beauly, Inverness, he was educated at St. Benedict's Abbey School and joined the Scots Guards from the Militia in December, 1894, becoming Lieutenant in November, 1897. He took part in the South African War, being present at the operations in the Orange River Colony from May to November, 1900, including actions at Biddulphsberg and Wittebergen, and at operations in the Transvaal and O.R.C. from November, 1900 to May, 1902. He was mentioned in despatches (L.G. 10 Sept. 1901), and received the Queen's medal with three clasps and the King's medal with two clasps. He was promoted Captain in March, 1901, and from April, 1903, to July, 1907, he was Adjutant of Lovat's Scouts. At the funeral of King Edward VII in May, 1910, the 2nd Bn. Scots Guards formed a guard of honour with the State Colour, under Major Fraser's command, at St.George's Chapel, Windsor. It was for these services that he was subsequently awarded the M.V.O. From November, 1910, he was A.D.C. to the Viceroy of India, being recalled for service at the outbreak of the war.
