A Great War pair to 2nd Lieutenant H.E. O'Hara, 74 'Tiger' Squadron, Royal Air Force, who was killed when his plane crashed in France 1918

BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (2. Lieut.) good very fine

2nd Lieutenant H.E. O'Hara served with the legendary Mick Mannock, V.C., D.S.O., M.C. and Ira 'Taffy' Jones, D.S.O., MC., D.F.C. in 74 'Tiger' Squadron R.A.F. and was killed at their aerodrome in France flying S.E.5 C6483. His death was witnessed by Ira Jones who relates 'May 25 1918, poor little O’Hara crashed this morning and was burnt to death on the aerodrome. Stalled, horrible sight. Thank God his death must have been instantaneous. He dived in from about 100 feet.' The husband of Helen E. O'Hara of 5A Roxborough Street, Greenock. His plane was totally destroyed by fire and it was sights like this which would have fuelled Mick Mannock's fear of death by fire whilst in action. Another pair is believed to exist to this recipient.
