United States of America, Rutherfordton (N. Carolina), Christopher Bechtler, gold Dollar, reads N. CAROLINA, 30G, with star on reverse (KM8), 1.9 gms. Has been mounted and centre of obverse heavily tooled, otherwise fine

Christopher Bechtler, a German, together with his son August and nephew Christopher Jr., came from Germany to Rutherfordton in 1830, and set up as a jeweller and assayer in the town, which was then at the centre of frantic gold mining activity. Bechtler started to coin gold in 1831, an activity carried on by his relatives after Bechtler's death in 1842.
