CHINA 1842 (Jewahir Khan, 1st Reg. Bengal Volunteers) fitted with replacement (?) bar suspension, contact marks and edge bruises, otherwise nearly very fine and very rare to Indian recipients
The 1st Bengal Volunteers was composed of one company from each of the 3rd, 15th, 17th, 23rd, 32nd, 41st, 52nd and 56th Regiments of Bengal Native Infantry. Most were Rajputs, whose caste prejudices prevented them cooking except on shore, causing them to suffer many privations. They arrived in China 900 strong but on return to Calcutta early in 1843 they did not muster 400 men.
