Instituted as the result of a bequest from Dr. Anthony Fothergill who died in 1813. A prize gold medal, to value of 50 guineas, to be awarded for the best discovery, to be approved by the Society, on the prevention of shipwreck, and the preservation of shipwrecked mariners. The Fothergillian Gold Medal was awarded only three times, the last in 1882.
