Three: Lieutenant H.N. Ashton, Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment

Lieutenant Henry Norman Ashton was twice wounded while serving with the 3rd and 8th Battalions, Y. & L. Regiment and died of influenza on 6 November 1918. He had originally joined the 3rd Battalion as a 2nd Lieutenant on 20 March 1915 and was attached to the 1st Battalion on his arrival in France. He went into action at the Battle of Loos in September but was hit in the thigh during a counter-attack. Initially transferred to a French hospital, Ashton was shipped home for further treatment. On his recovery in March 1917, he returned to France and joined the 8th Battalion which was based at Herzeele. This unit was soon heavily engaged in the fighting at Messines and once again Ashton became a casualty. On this occasion he was suffering badly from shell-shock and treated at the 7th General Hospital, St. Omer, before being shipped home. He finally became attached to the Royal Air Force and served under the Air Control at Kingsway, London; sold with full details including a photograph of his grave.
