Three: Major O.M. Conran, Royal Lancaster Regiment, killed in action whilst commanding 10 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps

Major Owen Mostyn Conran served in the Boer War with the King's Own Royal Lancaster regiment (Q.S.A., 2 clasps). Conran was for a period attached to the Egyptian Army and served in the operations in Darfur and Fasher for which he received the Sudan medal with two clasps. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was attached to No. 10 Squadron in France. As a pilot flying Armstrong Whitworth bombers, Conran took part in the battles of Messines and Ypres, the planes of his squadron mostly engaged in bombing and artillery observation. On 29 July 1917, Conran took off, with Lieutenant H. Mitton as his observer, on an artillery patrol over Carvin. Having dropped their bombs and fired 4 drums of ammunition, their machine crashed on the return journey, killing both Conran and Mitton. Major O.M. Conran was at this time commanding the Squadron. Sold with copies from 10 Squadron record book giving details of numerous missions flown by Conran.
