BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (2 Lieut.) together with Bronze Memorial Plaque (Bernard Theobald Sargeant) extremely fine (3)

2nd Lieutenant Bernard Theobald Sargeant was killed in action on 11 April 1917. He was 24 years old and is buried in the London Cemetery, Neuvill-Virasse, France. Sold with an original photograph of the recipient's wartime grave marker, a Buckingham Palace telegram and letters form the C.O. of the 3rd London Regiment and a Brigade Padre. The latter wrote: ‘I am so very sorry to tell you of the death of your son Bernard who was killed in the dreadful attack upon (censored) on Monday .... the other Padre in the Brigade who buried him this afternoon in the cemetery under the hill has handed me a pair of scissors and a button from his pocket .... I wish you could have been with me when the men brought down his body from the trenches. They were so tired and it was raining and cold but they were coming out and they wanted to bring his body with them. They were such good chaps ...’
