James Fowlis was born in Edinburgh and enlisted for the 22nd Light Dragoons in March 1801, and served with them until October 1819 when he transferred to the 8th Light Dragoons, then stationed at Bangalore. He was discharged in June 1824, having served abroad in the East Indies for more than 20 years.
