Robert Mack was killed in action with the 8th East Surrey Regiment on 1 July 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme, in which his battalion won everlasting fame when, led by Captain 'Billie' Nevill, four of the platoons went into the attack by kicking footballs towards the enemy's line. The lot includes extracts from Martin Middlebrook's book 'The First Day on the Somme', and a photocopy of R. Caton Woodville's picture from the Illustrated London News; together with other research, including a copy of Death Certificate.
